The governing council of Abia state university, uturu, has been tasked to place the university among the first three in Nigeria.

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti recently tasked members of the governing council and management of Abia State University, Uturu (ABSU) to improve its rating among Universities in Nigeria.

At a 2 day retreat for the members of the council and management of the university at Aguiyi Ironsi conference centre, Umuahia organized by the state government, on the theme “Building the New Abia State University of Our Dream, Through Excellence and Service,” the governor urged the council and management to do better.

He noted that ABSU’s rating at number 37 amongst Universities in Nigeria was not encouraging.

“That is not a comfortable place to be. It should be No 2 because it was the second State University that was set up in Nigeria

“So, we have a big challenge on our hands. We need to move from that number 37 to anywhere between Numbers 1 to 3 on that ranking for Universities

“But then, we need to understand the building blocks that are required . So, I will like participants in this retreat to come up with a clear vision and a strategy to get to anywhere between Numbers 1 to 3. We should not be anything less than No 3, ” Gov. Otti said.

The Governor promised to construct a New Faculty of Law and New Faculty of Agriculture buildings at Uturu to accommodate the faculties billed to return to the main campus at Uturu as a result of the recommendation of the visitation panel to ABSU, saying that, he got a report that the hostels built for students were in total despair and uninhabitable.

“The initial report I got was that there was a Faculty of Agriculture and a Faculty of Law buildings in Uturu and we moved to fix those buildings to receive the faculties that were going to be transferred back

“Unfortunately, I got another report that those buildings were in different stages of despair and dilapidation.

“So, on that basis, we said that this movement is not going to be immediate because we also don’t want to disrupt academic programmes.

“Just a few days ago, on Tuesday, I set up an Inter-disciplinary committee to go and have a detailed look and come back with a report.

“I just got the report last night and I read it. The conclusion is that there are no buildings that can house, even when renovated, Faculties of Agriculture and Law in Uturu .

“I have also taken a decision and this was just yesterday to construct new Faculty of Law and new Faculty of Agriculture.

“Very soon, the drawings would be approved and we would release funds to start and complete them within the shortest time possible.

“So, what that means is that those faculties would remain where they are until we have made adequate provision for them
and that should happen before the end of this academic year,” Gov. Otti stated.

He noted also that the report further revealed that ABSU students are living in unhealthy hostels and assured that he would fix the hostels to ensure they have good and decent accommodations.

the institution’s managers to come up with fresh ideas on how to make the motto of the school, “Excellence and Service” work, Governor Otti enjoined them to engage their alumni members and ensure that they contribute to the development of their Alma Mater.

He congratulated all the members of the ABSU Governing Council and Management on their appointments and said their that appointments were on merit. He further disclosed that the UN-Habitat is almost through with its work geared towards producing a master plan for Aba and Umuahia.

“It doesn’t matter where you come from, what is important is the skills you bring. Our appointments are strictly by merit and we are unapologetic about it. If you want the best, you must put in the best .

“I want to inform you that we had already engaged the UN-Habitat for Aba and Umuahia master plan and they are already working. I think they are through with the Aba master plan and they are on Umuahia,” Gov. Otti stated.

Speaking, the Honourable Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Prof. Uche Emeh Uche noted that the present Government inherited a University that was broken which led to the Governor, deploying strategies of reforming and sanitizing the institution having earlier declared a state of emergency on education in the State generally.

She said that the single campus policy for the institution is a concrete action taken by the Governor in line with the recommendation of the visitation panel of ASBU.

In his remarks, the Pro Chancellor and Chairman of the ABSU Governing Council, Rt. Hon. Agwu U. Agwu, Ph.D emphasized that the retreat would afford participants an opportunity to brainstorm and proffer solution to critical issues affecting the University and usher her into a 21st century global compliant institution.

While thanking the Governor for selecting a formidable team of technocrats who have distinguished themselves in various fields of endeavors as members of the council, RT. Hon. Agwu assured that under his watch, the institution would take it’s rightful place as number one in the comity of Universities across the country.

In his welcome address, the Vice Chancellor of ABSU, Prof. Ndukwe Okudo extolled the commitment of the Governor to transforming the education sector in Abia State demonstrated with the budgetary allocation of 20% to education in 2024 & 2025, provision of free and compulsory basic education, massive recruitment of teachers as well as the construction and reconstruction of schools across the State.

The event featured a special lecture from Dr. Hezekiah Madumere, a former Surveyor General and retired Permanent Secretary in Abia state.

Punishment and Prejudice: Navigating Strict Laws, Taboos against same-sex union in Nigeria

Published

By

Stephanie Clems, Umuahia.

Homosexuality is an old practice which was initially considered a taboo in the past before some countries like the United States of America and parts of Europe legalised it.

Within 2025, various issues bothering on same sex relationships were reported across Nigeria.

In Abia State, people speculated about individuals sexuality at various times because of their dress sense or their body structure.

Sometimes, these speculations turned out to be true, yet also false alarm at other times.

As the year winds down, CSUNews examines how in 2025, personal choices worked at cross purposes with the nation’s law and communities’ traditions with regards to homosexuality.

We asked a cross section of residents of Abia State of their impressions about lesbianism, gay and same sex marriage.

Nearly every one interviewed exhibited knowledge of the law that prohibits same sex union and recommends penalty for offenders.

They’re equally aware that it is a “taboo” in many cultures across the country.

Mr. Kelechi Thompson, a native of Ezea in Ebonyi State but resident in Aba narrates how his community punished a same sex couple found in their “love nest” which happened to be an uncompleted building.

“It is an abomination. How can two men be together ? This is unheard of,“ he lamented.

According to Mr. Thompson, those who first saw them leave the uncompleted building holding hands as lovers would while kissing on the road, stripped both naked and dragged them to the village head.

The village head according to him ordered that they both be flogged while still naked.

“It did not end there, because after the beating, they were handed over to the police, you know the law is against it.

“However, after they were granted bail on their first appearance in court, one of them jumped bail and is still at large while his partner is still being tried in court,” he said.

Like Mr. Thompson, Mr. Onwuka Ijebuonwu believes people should live by their customs as he gives an insight into what his community in Afara would do to such persons if caught in the act. These are typical mind-sets of many citizens concerning LGBTQ which have caused those with such sexual orientation to hide perpetually while living in the country or flee the country as the last resort.

The human rights advocates and activists appear handicapped with the law and so cannot protect those who have become or perceived victims of the law and culture .

Mrs. Lizzy Ugwum during an interview shared how someone she knew but never understood her sexual orientation was allegedly forced to run away after she was caught with her partner by her husband.

The people mete out corporal punishments in most cases before handing the perceived culprits over to the law enforcers.

The law prescribed a 14 year jail term for anyone found guilty of the offence, but fears are that those involved in the act may suffer being lynched even before the matter goes to court.

Some enlightened citizens of Nigeria may argue that the people have their lives to live, but the reality is that the Nigerian law with its culture and religions may never take lightly issues of homosexuality, hence the safety of gay people and lesbians is not guaranteed in the country.

.It does not also look like the nation is interested in reviewing the anti gay law any time soon.

Abia State is too small for us. Every time we are doing anything, we should have at the back of our mind, our brothers and sisters who are in different parts of this great land. “So, we are creating an enabling environment for all of them to operate and contribute to the development of our people.”And that’s why we didn’t restrict the membership to people from Abia, just like every other thing we do here. That, of course, I am here for. “So, we thank you, Your Excellency, for the visionary project. We are going to put the best of our abilities. So that from Isuikwuato to all the parts of our beautiful State, boys and girls, men and women, they would actually feel the impact of what the government and the leadership can bring to the people,” Prof. Ekekwe stated.

Also speaking, a member of the board, Dr. Mrs. Rita Amuchienwa described it as a good initiative and promised that, the team would deliver on its mandate.

“This is a very good initiative, Your Excellency. I’ve heard so much about Abia, I’ve heard so much about your leadership, and I’m so privileged and happy that I was honoured to be among this team that will make the Abia youth a better people. “I’m standing on my own to say that I will put in my effort with that of the team to ensure that we deliver on this mandate,” Dr Amuchienwa said.
