PDP GUBERNATORIAL PRIMARIES: PROF. IBE DISSOCIATES SELF FROM PARTY.
…threatens to seek redress
Chinwe Ugele, Umuahia.
The Prof Gregory Ibe’s campaign organisation has frowned at what it calls the disdainful antics of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to attempt to accord credibility and authenticity to their recently held governorship primaries in Abia State by sneaking in the name of Prof Gregory Ibe among the list of contestants in the said election.
In a statement signed by organisation and made available to CSUNews, it wondered how a person who resigned his membership of a party will still be included as a participant in that party’s election meant only for registered members.
It further states thus “for avoidance of doubt, Prof Gregory Ibe formally resigned his membership of the PDP through a letter dated 30th March 2022 addressed to the Abia State Chairman of the Party, which was appropriately delivered and acknowledged by the Chairman of Achara Mbaugwu Ward 7 in Isuikwuato Local Government Area.”
It is also worthy to note that Prof. Ibe who had his expression of interest form picked by a group of friends on his behalf, after which he declared his intention to run for the office of the governor, neither filled out his form nor returned it to the party and did not also submit himself to be screened.
Consequently, even without leaving the PDP, could not have qualified for the said primary election. “One therefore wonders how the name of Prof Ibe, who since making the widely publicised declaration titled “Message of Hope and Direction” on Easter Sunday 17 April 2022, has since moved on with his bid to realize ‘A New Abia’ under the APGA platform would resurface in the result sheet of PDP governorship primaries but for the handiwork of mischief makers whose chief aim is to accord legitimacy and acceptability to a failed exercise through the ingenuity of name dropping also known in the Abia political lexicon as ‘gamjism.”
Otherwise what would make a highly monetized delegate who immensely benefitted from the now popular special financial allocation appropriated exclusively for that purpose forget so soon the person he had been ‘purchased’ to vote for and mistakenly freely donate votes to a non participant in the contest who did not ‘see’ him?”
He had since taken up membership with the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and thereafter joined the governorship race under the banner of the Party.
According to the team, “for the purpose of emphasis, Prof Gregory Ibe ceased to be a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on 30th March 2022 and subsequently couldn’t have participated in the party’s governorship primaries of 25th May 2022.
The leaders of PDP in Abia state are therefore enjoined to take steps to correct this misinformation failure of which will compel Prof Gregory Ibe’s Campaign Organization (GICO) to seek other legal means of redress.

Abia Economy: feasibility study begins for proposed Azumini seaport as part of moves to make state gateway
By Editor, Umuahia

Governor Alex Otti has commenced the process for a feasibility study on the proposed Abia State Seaport at Azumini blue river in partnership with a Chinese firm – China Harbour Engineering Company, CHEC.
The Azumini Seaport project will be designed to position Abia as a gateway economy in the South-East, opening direct maritime access for Aba’s industrial cluster and the wider region.
When accomplished, it would cut cargo costs for manufacturers, decongest Lagos ports, and create a new logistics corridor linking Abia to global trade routes through the Imo/Azumini blue river.

According to the statement by the chief press secretary to the governor, Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, the feasibility study would cover technical, economic, environmental, and social viability, including dredging requirements, port design, road as well as rail linkages, and private-sector financing models.
The statement reads thus, “For Abia, this is strategic infrastructure: it ties Gov. Otti’s “Rebuild Abia” agenda to job creation, export competitiveness, and long-term revenue. For Nigeria, an Azumini port means a third functional port corridor alongside Onne and Ibom Deep Sea Port.”
The statement concludes by stating that the next steps after the study would determine timelines, investment structure, and federal approvals.

3rd Anniversary: Governor Otti flags-off construction of Abia specialist hospital in Bende
Stephanie Clems, Umuahia

Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, OFR, has flaged-off the construction of the Abia Specialist and Diagnostic Centre, Umunnato, Alayi Bende LGA.
The project is part of the efforts of Governor Otti to upgrade the long abandoned Umunnato General Hospital into a tertiary healthcare facility, with 100-bed ward, theatres, accident and emergency units, general outpatient departments, maternity wards, dental units and radiology departments.
Performing the groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday, 28th May, 2026, as part of activities marking his third anniversary in office, Governor Otti said that he decided to demolish and rebuild the old and dilapidated facility to get desired quality.
The Governor instructed the contractor to comply strictly with the specifications and deliver within one year.
He constituted a four-man supervisory team comprising the member representing Bende North State Constituency, Hon. Nnamdi Ibekwe; Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma; House of Representatives hopeful for Bende Federal Constituency, Dr Chima Anyaso; and the Deputy Mayor of Bende LGA, Lady Ifeoma Agu.
“We found that it was cheaper to do that (demolish & build a new one) than to try and fix something that you probably wouldn’t even get exactly what you require. Anywhere we flag-off a project, it means it will be commissioned and it will be commissioned in record time, he said.
The Governor expressed optimism that the hospital would be ready for commissioning during activities marking his administration’s fourth anniversary and inauguration of his second term in office.
“So, the contractor is here and I would like to give the contractor a target. “So, in the next one year as we will be celebrating our fourth anniversary and preparing for the next inauguration, we shall be commissioning this project,” Gov. Otti stated.

Speaking earlier, the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Enoch Ogbonnaya Uche noted that the establishment of the specialist hospital was in fulfilment of the Governor’s promise that each senatorial zone in the State would have a tertiary healthcare facility to serve as a referral centre for specialised medical care.
He said that when the Governor took over office, he made it a point of priority that, “every senatorial district or senatorial zone in Abia State must have a tertiary hospital to serve as the pinnacle referral centre for that senatorial zone.“And that is to bring specialised care to the doorstep of Abians so that nobody is left behind”, Prof Uche stated.
The Commissioner noted that the abandoned hospital, was established in 1962, and had deteriorated for decades.“This hospital was initially established in 1962. At that time, it was serving the whole of Abia North. Unfortunately, for 40 years, it has been abandoned,” Prof. Uche stated.
He said that Abia State University Teaching Hospital serves Abia South Senatorial zone, the Amachara Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Centre caters for Abia Central, while the Umunnato facility would serve the Abia North. Prof. Uche, informed the mammoth crowd that consultants working towards securing the Joint Commission International (JCI) certification, which is regarded globally as one of the highest standards in hospital accreditation, had already commenced work in line with the directive of the Governor.
The Governor later commissioned two Primary Healthcare Centres, including the Umuisi Primary Healthcare facility and the Okafia Primary Healthcare facility all in Igbere, Bende Local Government Areas.
