Abia governance: “We will borrow for investment, not consumption” —Governor Otti
By Editor, Umuahia

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, has said that his administration would only borrow for investments when the need arose and not for squandering.
He said that his government was yet to borrow in the last 2 years he had been on the saddle of leadership in the state.
The governor made this known on Tuesday, July 1, 2025 during the welcome dinner organized by the Abia state government for the Abia State Global Economic Advisory Council, ushering in the beginning of the 2025 mid-year retreat for the appointees of the Government.
The governor’s comment was in reaction to alleged false claims of the opposition that he had been borrowing to run the state.
He drew their attention to the recently published debt profile report by the Debt Management Office (DMO) which put Abia first among the states that reduced their debts between March 2024 and March 2025.
According to the DMO report, within the period under review, Abia reduced its public debt exposure by 57.20%, the highest reduction across the country.
“There is nothing wrong with criticizing the government, but you must criticize with facts.
“Opinions are free but facts are sacred.
“Some people have come out to say that we are borrowing, they are lying. Did I borrow from them? I saw a report yesterday that says that 26 out of the 36 States have actually reduced loans in the last 12 months and Abia came first, having reduced its debt profile by 57.20% in one year,” Dr. Otti said .
Speaking further, he said, “So, when we say we have not borrowed, we know what we are talking about.
He however said that even though the government was yet to borrow, I’d didn’t mean “we will not borrow.
” We will borrow when we need to borrow. We will borrow for investments that are regenerative. We will not borrow to eat.
“We will not borrow to consume. We will borrow for capital expenditure,” the Governor said.
The Governor addressed the speculations and reports from some quarters that he was planning to join the APC or the coalition currently being formed by some opposition persons in the country, stating clearly that he was still a member of the labour party with the Supreme Court having resolved the crisis that threatened the survival of the party.
“I will just spend a few minutes talking about what some members of the Global Economic Council have been asking me. One of them is the report about 5 Governors decamping to APC… I’m still a member of the Labour Party and I’m not looking for where to decamp to.
“The second point is about coalition, and a lot of people have been asking me, are you a member of the coalition? And, my response is, have you seen my name? Have you seen me attending the coalition meeting?“We are just busy doing the work that Abia people have given us. So, we are not attending any coalition meeting, I have not attended any one and nobody has invited me.“I am happy where I am. Yes, we had issues, if you don’t have issues, you are dead… So, you wake up and there is one problem or the other, you solve the problem. You don’t run away from a problem and pretend to have solved it.“When we had our problems, we fought all the way to the Supreme Court and retrieved our party at the Supreme Court.
“I believe that a few issues that remain would be resolved very soon because the Supreme Court Judgment was very, very clear,” Governor Otti assured.”
The State’s Chief Executive disclosed that his administration came to do things right, stressing that, those who didn’t want to do things right have no business in his Government.
He warned those making noise about stomach infrastructure that Abians are not people who believe in handouts but hard – working people who just need the enabling environment, like good roads, clean environment, etc, to thrive in their businesses and daily endeavours.
Speaking further he said that making portable water available to the people is the next thing his administration is dealing with. “We want to get to that level where you open your tap and you have public water running. In the next few weeks, we are going to flag off the water project in Aba around CKC.

There is also another one in Umuahia and a lot of other places. We will get there,” the Governor added. Dr. Otti also disclosed that his administration has set up a Project Implementation Bureau, headed by an Abia son, Mr. Onyinye Nwosu, who left his job in Canada, where he was working with General Electric (GE), to contribute his quota for the growth and development of the State.
Governor Otti thanked Members of the 20-Member Advisory Council for their sacrificial support and contributions which have helped his administration record the achievements being celebrated within and beyond the State in the last 2 years.
“I want to thank everyone who contributed, particularly, the Council; anyhow you look at it, everything revolves round the economy… If you get your economy right, every other thing will fall in place.
“That’s why we went over and beyond to convince these 20 eggheads who are otherwise busy to guide us and we are lucky that they accepted. And, from all indications, they’ve been here for one year. They meet every quarter or when the need arises, to come up with ideas, download them and ours is just to implement,” the Governor stated.
Earlier in her speech on behalf of the Council, the Co-Chair of the Abia Global Economic Advisory Council, Prof. Ms. Arunma Oteh, said that it was an absolute pleasure to serve in the Economic Advisory Council and an absolute pleasure to see and be part of what has been achieved in Abia. She further stated that Abia is now truly the number one, not just in alphabet but also in performance.
In his vote of thanks, the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Kenneth Kalu thanked the members of the Council for their sacrifices to help the administration succeed. He explained that the good thing about what the Council is doing is that the results are showing and Abians are very happy. The event equally featured the cutting of a cake marking the first anniversary of establishing the Abia Global Economic Advisory Council.

Stephanie Clems, Umuahia

eAbia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti has said that, his successor in 2031 will be better than himself, adding he was laying a solid foundation for the development of the state.
Governor Otti stated this during the grande reception service organised in his honour by the Assemblies of God Church, Okaiuga – Nkwoegwu, Umuahia North LGA.
The governor said that he was just starting, and the time for the aggressive development of Abia State was then, adding that the curse that had held the State down has been broken.
“We have just started. We are not three years yet. So, you can imagine what will happen by the time we are done in 2031.
“So, you know there is a time and a season for everything. So, what we have started is the time for the aggressive development of Abia State.
“The news I have for Abia people is that we have broken that curse that held us down and whoever is going to succeed me will be better than me.
” So, when people think we are going to go back to them, they must be dreaming, we’ve moved,” Gov. Otti said.
Governor Otti said that, he believed in Psalms chapter 62 verse 11, which declared that, “God has spoken once, twice, have I heard this? That power belongs to God.
“So, you can do everything you want to do but, if it wasn’t God’s time, it will not work and when it’s God’s time, even if you are sleeping, God will wake you up,” he said.
.On their request for provision of a bus for evangelism and land for prayer camp, governor Otti confirmed to them that they would receive a hummer bus this week, courtesy of Prince, Dr. Arthur Eze, one of their guests.
He also directed the Chief of Staff, Pastor Caleb Ajagba, Ph.D, to meet with the Church leadership and work out modalities for securing a land for them as requested.

“Under your (Gov. Otti’s) leadership, Abia State has witnessed a bold and deliberate restoration of public infrastructure – roads abandoned for decades have been reconstructed and reopened, “Connecting communities, easing transportation, stimulating commerce, and restoring the dignity of both urban and rural environments” Rev. Ogbudu said.
Rev. Ogbudu went further to note that the renewal of critical road networks across Aba and beyond by Governor Otti has revived economic activities and repositioned Abia State as a credible destination for investment.
He also said that beyond infrastructure, the administration has introduced “a new culture of fiscal discipline and prudent resource management.
“”Salaries and pensions are now paid with regularity and respect, restoring hope and dignity to the workers and retirees who were once forgotten. “For the first time since the creation of Abia State, public funds are being managed with transparency, accountability and confidence.
“Your excellency has also demonstrated uncommon courage in institutional reforms, cleaning up public systems, strengthening governance structures, and insisting that public office must serve the people rather than personal interests,” Rev. Ogbudu maintained.
The servant of God used the opportunity to request the Governor to provide them with a Hummer bus to support evangelism and the allocation of land for a prayer village for the Church.

Obsequies: Tributes pour in as Don Lulu lays late mother to rest
Stephanie Clems, Umuahia

Tributes poured in on Saturday 10th January, 2026 as the family of Mayor Lucky Igbokwe, popularly known as Don Lulu, laid his beloved mother, Late Dame Peace Igbokwe, to rest.

The burial of the matriarch who kicked the bucket on October 24, 2025, at the age of 60 attracted the high and mighty of Abia politics, captains of industry, entertainers and friends and well wishers.
The funeral service was held at Wesley Cathedral Church, Umuwaya Road, Umuahia, where the Conference Secretary of the Methodist Church, Umuahia Archdiocese, His Grace, Dr. Babatunde Taiwo, delivered an uplifting homily.

In his sermon titled “Let Not Your Heart Be Troubled,” bishop Taiwo extolled the exceptional virtues of the late Dame Peace Igbokwe, describing her as a woman of substance, courage, and valor.
He consoled the bereaved family, urging them not to be overwhelmed by grief but to find peace in the assurance that their mother was in a better place.
The cleric emphasized the fragility of the human heart, warning against excessive worries and stress, which he said could lead to heart-related illnesses.
He encouraged individuals to make their health a priority, saying that proper care of the body could lead to long life.
“This body can take us to 95 years and beyond if we do not burden it with unnecessary cares, worries, and problems,” Bishop Taiwo cautioned.
He also encouraged Mayor Lucky Igbokwe, the first son of the deceased, to remain strong and ready to assume leadership responsibilities following the vacuum created by his mother’s passing.

In his remarks, Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, sympathized with Mayor Igbokwe over the sudden loss of his mother at a time when she should have been enjoying the fruits of her labour.
The Governor noted that despite her relatively short stay on earth, Dame Peace lived a fulfilled life and raised children who have become outstanding men and women.“It is not the years in our life but the life in our years.
If you read her biography carefully, you will understand that she lived ahead of her time and left behind enduring legacies,” the Governor stated.
Governor Otti commended the Methodist Church for the orderly conduct of the funeral service and appreciated the people of Ohuhu for their massive turnout to bid the deceased farewell.
He concluded by praying that such a tragedy would not befall the Igbokwe family again.
In his tribute, Mayor Lucky Igbokwe described his late mother as a strong-willed and resilient woman who, despite losing her husband early in life, worked tirelessly to raise her children and instill strong moral values in them. He prayed for the peaceful repose of her soul.
The funeral ceremony attracted a distinguished gathering, including top government officials like the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Rt Hon Benjamin Kalu, the Member Representing Ikwuano Umuahia Federal Constituency Hon. Obi Aguocha, Former Minister Dr Uche Ogah, Senator Darlington Nwokocha among others.
