Prof. Ibe may be pressurised into dumping PDP
Chinwe Ugele, Umuahia
There are indications that a frontline contender in the gubernatorial election of Abia state come 2023, Prof. Greg Ibe may consider decamping to another political party to actualise his ambition.
This is sequel to the confusion trailing the recent multiple zoning of the seat of governor in the 2023 Abia gubernatorial contest to Abia Central and Abia North senatorial zones by the State Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Reacting to the novel zoning formula recently announced by the Abia state PDP chairman, Rt. Hon Asiforo Okere, a political analyst, Dr Ezechi Chukwu, has described the formula as ” a tempting invitation to anarchy capable of further polarizing the rank and file of Abia PDP”.
According to Dr Chukwu, “The Abia PDP’s multiple zoning formula is an unnecessary political experiment that unwittingly pitches the Abia North senatorial district, which from all intents and purposes is the right zone that should produce the next Governor, against their brothers from Abia central, thereby creating avoidable confusion”.
While condemning the strange and unpopular zoning policy, Dr Chukwu called on the PDP National Working Committee to intervene by prevailing on the leadership of Abia PDP to rethink the formula in order to save the party from the threat of imminent implosion and consequent distingeration . He said, “ With the recent biased stance of the Hon Okere led leadership in the state, which runs contrary to the positions held by such party stalwarts as the former Governor and serving senator representing Abia Central District, Sen. Theodore Orji, the former Senate President, Sen.Adolph Wabara and former Secretary to Abia state government, Dr Eme Okoro, the stage is set for implosion within the party”. He therefore advised all serious minded guber aspirants within the fold of PDP in Abia to consider the option of moving to other political parties unless the NWC intervenes.
He said,” From the ensuing political brohaha within Abia PDP, which climaxed with the obnoxious zoning policy, it is obvious the leaders of the party have secret agenda that border on godfatherism and sectionalism.
“I therefore advise such serious minded aspirants as Prof Ibe to consider the option of moving to other political parties that guarantee equity, fairness, justice and competitiveness in their leadership selection process”. In his separate reaction, a former PDP aspirant in the last Anambra state guber election Dr Ifedi Okwenna, bemoaned the unfortunate political climate within Abia PDP, stressing that the present situation has the potential of delivering the state into the hands of opposing parties. He therefore counseled the Abia SWC to abide by the recent directives given by both national chairman of the party Sen. Iyorchia Ayu and South East zonal chairman Chief Ali Odefa enjoining all organs of the party to adhere strictly to established zoning arrangements within their areas of jurisdiction. When contacted the Chairman of Abia Crusaders Foundation, Prof Ibe’s political Organisation, Prince Emeka Okafor, confirmed that “arising from the zoning uncertainties, there has been intensification of pressure on Prof Ibe to move to other parties but he has remained positive and resolute, believing and affirming that our leaders will do the right thing”. The recent multiple zoning proposal of Abia PDP which inadvertently zoned the seat of governor in the 2023 contest to both Abia Central and Abia North districts respectively has continued to receive severe bashing from critical stakeholders, with analysts believing that the recent purported endorsement of a former Vice Chancellor of Abia State University Uturu, Prof Ikonne for the plum job is a public confirmation and attestation of a preconceived hidden agenda which albinitio precipitated the strange policy. Many respondents wondered at the rationale behind the choice of Prof Ikonne who they alleged performed abysmally both as Rector of Abia State Polytechnic Aba and Vice Chancellor of Abia State University Uturu, whose only achievement is membership of the Optometry Association of Nigeria. According to them staff of both institutions are yet to recover from Prof Ikonne’s legacy of 34 and 10 months salary indebtedness respectively. Available information confirm that part of the sins of the former Senate President Sen. Adolph Wabara which cost him his appointment as Pro Chancellor is his efforts to clean up the financial mess left by Prof Ikonne. If the plan is to pick a candidate from the Umunneato clan why prefer an incompetent and over aged person over such vibrant youths as Engr Enyinnaya Nwafor, Ncheta Omeremkpe, C. O Enweremadu, Okey Ahaiwe and Chinenye Nwogu, they querried. In conclusion, they counselled Abia PDP to be guided by Chinua Achebe’s proverb that says” Who the gods want to kill they first make mad” and take urgent steps to reverse their actions in order to save the state from dire consequences, stressing that “to be fore warned is to be fore armed”.

LP Abia state Congress: New leadership team takes charge as Azubuike, Iroegbu, others emerge
Stephanie Clems, Umuahia

As a precursor to the national convention coming up in a few days time, the Labour party in Abia State under the Nenadi Usman led executive has unveiled a new state working committee.
The Congress which took place at the party’s state secretariat in Umuahia attracted party chieftains, national assembly members, national secretary of the party and members of the state executive council.
Before officials of Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC and the organising committee, names of the new executive were announced with positions and thereafter the delegates affirmed through a voice vote acclaimed their positions.

The chairman of the state organising committee, Hon. Achọ Obiọma in his opening remarks, disclosed that the party had adopted a grassroots method which allows members to choose their preferred officers themselves and present a common front.

Governor Alex Otti congratulated the new SWC and urged members to work in unison. He said that it was the time to pursue a common goal from the same approach.
The governor commended the outgoing chairman, Emma Otti who he said “stood in the gap” when the party was in turmoil in the state. He equally encouraged him not to abandon the party now as more assignments could be given to him in future to execute.

The new chairman , Mr. Peter Azubuike thanked the party faithful for reposing such trust in them and assured of delivering positive results in 2027.
During an interview with journalists, the chairman who spoke tough said he would leverage the success of the party in governance to secure more wins in 2027.
“The truth is that we’re already starting on a good note. We have a good governor and the state is already on its high-rising. As for the party, what we will do is to support the government to ensure that we retain the seat come 2027 and I can assure you it’s not under probability whether we will or not.
“As for the government house come 2027, Labour party is already seated there, that’s one assurance we can give you, he said.
The chairman continued, “As to what we’re bringing new to the party, we’re going to bring in more energy, bring in vigour, we’re going to do serious membership drive to ensure that if there are aspects of Abia that are not yet captured by the labour party, we ensure we go into every nook and cranny of the state to make sure we capture it, he said.
“

He further dismissed the All progressives Congress as a viable opposition party, saying they’re only pretending in the state to negotiate for a benefit from president Bola Tinubu.
“The only place APC exists outside Abia is Abuja. In Abia, I can assure you that if we even want to count opposition’s, APC is not even the first, they’re not even the second. For those who can actually attest to the realities on ground, they will let you know clearly that some of those who portray themselves as opposition maybe under the guise of APC, they’re doing that probably to see what they can get from Mr. President.
“I can assure you that this is no longer time for merchandising politics. Abians know fully well that Abia is Labour party,” he said.
On the lingering leadership tussle at the national level, Mr. Azubuike said the party was not in trouble anymore in the party as their issued had been resolved.
“I can tell you we used to have crisis in Labour party , but as at today, we’re no longer having crisis, the party has been fully recovered,” he concluded.
The national convention of the party is scheduled for the 28th of April, 2026 at the International Conference Centre, in Umuahia, Abịa State.
