OMPAN Secretariat: Dep. Speaker unveils new office space, calls for true patriotism.

After nine (9) years of existence in the state, the Online media Publishers Association of Nigeria, Abia chapter has finally secured a secretariat in Umuahia.
The secretariat located on Eket street was unveiled on Monday, August 5, 2024 by deputy speaker Benjamin Kalu in the presence of dignitaries who accompanied him to the occasion.
In his speech as the special guest of honour, the deputy speaker emphasised the need for media people to use their platforms to promote patriotism and also project government’s activities.
“Patriotism is not just merely waving the flag and singing the national anthem,” he said .
According to him, the citizens ought to have been informed adequately about the efforts of reform by the government, saying that if this was done, it would have doused the tempo of the protest.
He also said the issues of misconception and fake news could have been avoided through proper education and information through the media.
The deputy speaker therefore urged media practitioners to develop themselves in data analysis and uphold the highest level of ethical values in the discharge of their duties.
He commended the association for the unity that has culminated to progress and enjoined members to always hold public office holders accountable.
Chairman of the association, Chief Promise Uzoma Okoro, thanked the deputy speaker for being part of history by honouring the call to be the special guest of honour.
He also lauded Kalu for his role in ensuring the signing of the South East Development Commission bill into law.
Some members of the association, Mr. Nwokocha and Mr. Ifeanyi Okali expressed gratitude to the deputy speaker for his friendly disposition to the media always which has led to his significant contributions to the association and also assured of commitments to responsible journalism.
“Benjamin Kalu has been a strong supporter of OMPAN Abia chapter, and his efforts have helped to elevate the chapter’s reputation within the association,” Okali said.
