Abia developmental plan: President Tinubu approves $125Million Islamic Development Bank loan for Abia State Integrated Infrastructure Development Project(ABSIID)
By Editor, Umuahia
Abia State Government has announced that it has received the approval of the long-awaited USD 125 Million Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) financing facility for the Abia State Integrated Infrastructure Development Project from the Federal Executive Council (FEC) at its meeting of Wednesday, August 13, 2025.
A press statement by the Chief press secretary, Ukoha Njoku Ukoha said the approval marked a major milestone in a project that has undergone extensive consultations and procedural steps, adding that it was a critical component of the overall co-financing arrangement for the State’s ambitious infrastructure development drive.
The project’s total cost is put at USD 263.80 million, comprising:•USD 125 million from the Islamic Development Bank [ IsDB]•USD 100 million from the African Development Bank (AfDB);•USD 15 million from the Canada–Africa Development Bank; and•USD 23.80 million counterpart funding from the Abia State Government. The IsDB facility is particularly significant because its financing agreement must be signed for the project to proceed, given the integrated nature of the co-financing structure.
According to the statement, The AfDB and Canada–Africa Development Bank financing agreements have already been concluded, with the AfDB loan agreement signed earlier this year.
Under the project, the IsDB financing will support the construction of approximately 126 kilometres of road network in Aba and 35.57 kilometres in Umuahia, including a link road between the two cities, as well as critical erosion control works within the project sites.
When completed, the project will among many things;
*Reduce travel time in Abia’s busiest urban corridors;.
*Create over 3,000 jobs for local residents;•Reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
*Improve access to social services and attract private sector investment.
The project is owned by the Abia State Government and will be executed through the State Ministry of Works, under the supervision of the State Steering Committee. The Steering Committee will provide policy direction to the State Project Implementation Unit (SPIU) and all stakeholders.
Procurement for the IsDB-financed components, covering civil works and consultancy services will follow the Bank’s procurement guidelines, with disbursements made directly to contractors and consultants.
This milestone follows sustained engagement and intergovernmental coordination. This approval is also a direct complement to the visionary infrastructural development agenda of the administration.
Since assuming office, the governor has made the modernization of Abia’s road networks, the revitalization of urban centres, and the integration of sustainable development principles a cornerstone of his administration.
The IsDB facility will strengthen these ongoing efforts, accelerating the pace of road reconstruction in Aba and Umuahia, addressing critical erosion challenges, and laying the groundwork for an integrated transportation network that supports commerce, improves quality of life, and enhances the State’s competitiveness.
Governor Alex Otti has expressed appreciation to: President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his trust and pragmatic leadership, the National Assembly, for approving the borrowing plan, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, for his leadership in concluding the financing process, Secretary to the Government of the Federation and Attorney General of the Federation for their roles in facilitating the process;.
The VP IsDB, Dr. Mansur Muhktar who not only reached out in November 2023, but saw to it that internal approvals were received on the request for the facility..
All other stakeholders who contributed to this success.Governor Otti further noted that this landmark project will complement his administration’s ongoing infrastructural development initiatives, aimed at modernizing Abia’s transportation network, revitalizing urban centres, and positioning the State as a hub for sustainable economic growth.

Nigeria to digitise consular services in Spain, deepen diaspora engagement
By Editor, Umuahia

The Nigerian Embassy in Madrid has disclosed plans to digitise records of Nigerians resident in Spain and introduce Total Quality Management (TQM) principles to improve consular service delivery.
This is aimed at strengthening citizen-centred diplomacy and enhancing engagement with the Nigerian diaspora.
The initiatives were announced by Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Spain, Ambassador Okezie Ikpeazu, during a meeting with the Executive Committee of the Federation of Nigerian Communities in Spain (FNCS) at the consulate in Madrid.
Ikpeazu said the digitisation initiative would create a comprehensive database of Nigerians in Spain, enabling the Mission to improve communication, respond more efficiently to consular requests and deliver faster, technology-driven services.

“Our goal is to build a responsive, efficient and truly citizen-centred Mission that better serves Nigerians in Spain,” the ambassador said.
He added that the adoption of Total Quality Management principles would strengthen accountability, professionalism and service standards across the Embassy in line with the Federal Government’s commitment to improved service delivery.
The Ambassador reaffirmed that the welfare, protection and effective representation of Nigerians abroad remain central to the Mission’s mandate and pledged continued collaboration with the Nigerian community in Spain.
Ikpeazu said the Embassy would continue engaging relevant authorities and stakeholders on initiatives that promote the interests of Nigerians in Spain while advancing Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives.
He said the Mission remains committed to implementing the Federal Government’s 4-D foreign policy framework of Democracy, Development, Demography and Diaspora, noting that stronger engagement with Nigerians abroad, improved service delivery and strategic partnerships with the diaspora are essential to advancing Nigeria’s national development and international standing.
“Our engagement with Nigerians in Spain reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to the 4-D foreign policy framework. The diaspora remains a vital partner in promoting Nigeria’s development and strengthening our global presence,” Ikpeazu said.
The Ambassador also urged Nigerians resident in Spain to remain law-abiding and continue projecting a positive image of Nigeria by respecting the laws and institutions of their host country.
“Your conduct reflects the image of Nigeria. Lead with integrity, promote unity and continue to be worthy ambassadors of our nation,” he said.
The FNCS delegation, led by its President, Hon. Jackson Oboh, welcomed the Embassy’s commitment to closer engagement while highlighting issues affecting Nigerians across Spain.
Among the concerns raised was the restoration of direct flight connectivity between Nigeria and Spain, which the federation said would facilitate travel, promote trade and investment, boost tourism and strengthen bilateral relations.
“Direct flights will ease travel, stimulate business and further deepen relations between Nigeria and Spain,” Oboh said.
Both parties agreed to institutionalise regular consultations between the Embassy and the Federation of Nigerian Communities in Spain to strengthen collaboration, improve the welfare of Nigerians in Spain and support more effective consular service delivery.
The engagement underscores Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening ties with its diaspora community in line with the Federal Government’s 4-D foreign policy framework, which recognises Nigerians abroad as strategic partners in advancing national development, economic diplomacy and stronger bilateral relations.

Abia 2027 guber: Group endorses governor Otti, vows to maintain “good governance template beyond 2031
Stephanie Clem’s, Umuahia

Leaders of a non-political, and nonpartisan group, Alliance for Good Governance in Abia state and stakeholders, prime movers, captains of industry and accomplished Professionals from Abia North senatorial zone have unanimously endorsed Governor Alex Otti, OFR, for a second term, citing “exceptional and visible performance” across all sectors.
The group, predominantly made up of professionals, captains of industry, and opinion moulders with no personal political ambition, made the declaration at the end of its inaugural meeting on Saturday, June 27, at the residence of Chief Ebueme Ezikpe in Abiriba, Ohafia LGA.
Addressing journalists, the group’s spokesman and former Secretary to the Abia State government Prof. Mkpa Agu Mkpa, said the meeting was convened to strategize on sustaining the template for good governance established and exemplified by Governor Alex Otti’s administration.
“The purpose was simple: to ensure that good governance in Abia is perpetrated and perpetuated,” Prof. Mkpa said.
He noted that attendees came from all five LGAs in Abia North – Bende, Ohafia, Arochukwu, Isuikwuato, and Umunneochi.

“The stakeholders, opinion moulders, captains of industry, accomplished professionals and prime movers present are not seeking patronage. They are self-made Abians who, by God’s grace, need nothing from government except to see good governance sustained,” he said.
Prof. Mkpa said all speakers at the meeting extolled Governor Otti’s “unquestionable transformative work” in education, infrastructure, health, agriculture, security, transport, and public service.
“It was unanimous, Abia has never had it so good. The Governor does not need more campaigns because his works are speaking for him,” he said.
The group also resolved to mobilize citizens to obtain their permanent voter cards ahead of 2027, work to return members of the Governor’s party to state and national assembly seats, noting “he cannot do it alone.”
He said they are also to protect the governance template of Governor Otti beyond 2031 so that future administrations remain bound by it.

A stakeholder, business mogul and proprietor of Ahudiyannem Queens & Football Club, Dr. Robert Onyeani also said the road network in Abia North has directly enabled private investment and businesses to thrive.
He said that the entire stakeholders especially from the Abia North Zone have agreed to do everything possible to ensure Governor Otti is reelected in 2027.
“He has done the road from Umuahia to Arochukwu. I moved my two teams and my hotel to Abiriba because of the good roads. For me to come out like this means we are giving him massive support to return in 2027 and to bring in credible successor that will sustain what he has started,” Dr. Onyeani said.
Contributing, the host of the meeting and a business leader, Chief Ebueme Ezikpe, stressed that the group deliberately excluded career politicians. “Nobody here is seeking political office or anything from the Governor. We are Abians who have seen a different government. For over 25 years, Abia was in a mess. As a businessman in Aba then, many of us ran away for our lives, that has changed,” Chief Ezikpe said.
He said that they did not admit core politicians and those seeking political offices or patronage in the group but have pitched tent with Governor Alex Otti because of his achievements which are unparalleled and maintained that they are not only rallying round for the reelection of the Governor but also for the reelection and election of those that would work with him at the State and Federal Legislative Houses.
There were many accomplished sons of Abia who aligned with the group and it’s agenda.
