Alaoji power plant restored as ABSG continues strategic push for stable Power supply across Abia As NDPHC Restores ALAOJI
By Editor, Umuahia

Abia state governor, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, has restated the commitment of his administration to delivering uninterrupted power supply across the state through strategic partnerships and bold reforms in the power sector.
Governor Otti made this known while receiving the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC), Jennifer Adighije, and her delegation during in his office.
At the meeting, Governor Otti described electricity as one of the most critical drivers of economic growth, industrial productivity, healthcare delivery, education, and overall quality of life.
He said that his administration made stable power supply upon assumption of office in 2023 a priorty.
“Power is one of the most important infrastructures for driving growth in any economy. Production depends on power, life itself depends on power.
“Schools, hospitals, everybody requires power,” he said.
The State Chief Executive commended the leadership of NDPHC for successfully restoring the 450MW Alaoji Open Circuit Power Plant after extensive remedial works and settlement of outstanding obligations with gas suppliers.
“We want to congratulate you and thank you again for bringing the Alaoji plant back to life.
Generating close to 400 megawatts is a major achievement,” governor Otti said.
Governor Otti said that the seamless evacuation capacity along the Alaoji corridor presents a significant opportunity for Abia State, particularly the Umuahia ring-fenced power market, which the State government is actively developing.
He disclosed that the state government has already entered into an agreement with the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) to acquire and take over electricity distribution assets covering Umuahia through Arochukwu and Umunneochi and the rest Local Government Areas as part of efforts to strengthen energy independence and improve power delivery across the state.

“That agreement has been signed and we are now at the payment stage. Once completed, and with the establishment of the Abia State Electricity Regulatory Agency, we will have the framework necessary to drive efficient power distribution within the State,” the governor said.
Governor Otti further emphasized the state’s readiness to partner NDPHC to wheel electricity directly from the Alaoji power plant to Umuahia and surrounding communities, describing the arrangement as “a low-hanging fruit” capable of rapidly transforming economic activities in the area.
The Governor also highlighted ongoing investments in renewable energy and mini-grid projects across the State, noting that Abia is strategically positioning itself to achieve sustainable and reliable electricity supply through a diversified energy mix.

Earlier, the Managing Director/CEO of NDPHC, Jennifer Adighije, informed the Governor that the company had successfully restored three generating units at the Alaoji power plant, making approximately 375MW currently available for dispatch to the national grid.
She explained that the plant had been shut down since 2023 following discrepancies in gas metering and trading points, which led to supply disruptions and accumulated debts. However, under her leadership, the company undertook extensive electromechanical and gas-line remediation works, while also clearing outstanding obligations owed to TotalEnergies.
Adighije praised Governor Otti’s reforms in the electricity sector, especially the Aba ring-fenced power model and the establishment of the Abia State Electricity Regulatory Agency, describing the State as one of the leading sub-national governments driving electricity market reforms in Nigeria.
She expressed NDPHC’s readiness to partner with Abia state under the new Electricity Act framework to ensure reliable electricity supply for households, industries, and commercial clusters across the state.
“As the largest power generation company in Nigeria with over 4,000 megawatts installed capacity, we are aggressively pursuing strategic partnerships with state governments and eligible customers.
We believe Abia state presents a strong and viable partnership opportunity,” she said.

Stephanie Clem’s, Umuahia

Leaders of a non-political, and nonpartisan group, Alliance for Good Governance in Abia state and stakeholders, prime movers, captains of industry and accomplished Professionals from Abia North senatorial zone have unanimously endorsed Governor Alex Otti, OFR, for a second term, citing “exceptional and visible performance” across all sectors.
The group, predominantly made up of professionals, captains of industry, and opinion moulders with no personal political ambition, made the declaration at the end of its inaugural meeting on Saturday, June 27, at the residence of Chief Ebueme Ezikpe in Abiriba, Ohafia LGA.
Addressing journalists, the group’s spokesman and former Secretary to the Abia State government Prof. Mkpa Agu Mkpa, said the meeting was convened to strategize on sustaining the template for good governance established and exemplified by Governor Alex Otti’s administration.
“The purpose was simple: to ensure that good governance in Abia is perpetrated and perpetuated,” Prof. Mkpa said.
He noted that attendees came from all five LGAs in Abia North – Bende, Ohafia, Arochukwu, Isuikwuato, and Umunneochi.

“The stakeholders, opinion moulders, captains of industry, accomplished professionals and prime movers present are not seeking patronage. They are self-made Abians who, by God’s grace, need nothing from government except to see good governance sustained,” he said.
Prof. Mkpa said all speakers at the meeting extolled Governor Otti’s “unquestionable transformative work” in education, infrastructure, health, agriculture, security, transport, and public service.
“It was unanimous, Abia has never had it so good. The Governor does not need more campaigns because his works are speaking for him,” he said.
The group also resolved to mobilize citizens to obtain their permanent voter cards ahead of 2027, work to return members of the Governor’s party to state and national assembly seats, noting “he cannot do it alone.”
He said they are also to protect the governance template of Governor Otti beyond 2031 so that future administrations remain bound by it.

A stakeholder, business mogul and proprietor of Ahudiyannem Queens & Football Club, Dr. Robert Onyeani also said the road network in Abia North has directly enabled private investment and businesses to thrive.
He said that the entire stakeholders especially from the Abia North Zone have agreed to do everything possible to ensure Governor Otti is reelected in 2027.
“He has done the road from Umuahia to Arochukwu. I moved my two teams and my hotel to Abiriba because of the good roads. For me to come out like this means we are giving him massive support to return in 2027 and to bring in credible successor that will sustain what he has started,” Dr. Onyeani said.
Contributing, the host of the meeting and a business leader, Chief Ebueme Ezikpe, stressed that the group deliberately excluded career politicians. “Nobody here is seeking political office or anything from the Governor. We are Abians who have seen a different government. For over 25 years, Abia was in a mess. As a businessman in Aba then, many of us ran away for our lives, that has changed,” Chief Ezikpe said.
He said that they did not admit core politicians and those seeking political offices or patronage in the group but have pitched tent with Governor Alex Otti because of his achievements which are unparalleled and maintained that they are not only rallying round for the reelection of the Governor but also for the reelection and election of those that would work with him at the State and Federal Legislative Houses.
There were many accomplished sons of Abia who aligned with the group and it’s agenda.
